About this issue:
Jacket Vinyl Play grade: Side 1 Track 1 – Starts strong, very clean and clear. Nothing behind the music. Strong trumpet solo with no distractions. Piano solo with bassline behind it sounds great. A very few light pops, they go away. Track ends strong. Track 2 – Right out of the gate, the track is strong. Nothing distracting behind it. Piano part starts, and you have to struggle to hear those faint ticks. They go away, however. Trombone part is clear and clean. Sax section is also strong. This is a very clean track here and it shines. A couple of ticks are heard, nothing steady, but they disappear. Track 3 – This track plays flawlessly from the outset. Just as strong deep into the track, nothing behind it to distract the listener. Piano solo is stellar. An exquisite track with no imperfections.
Side 2 Track 1 – Starts very clean and clear. Moves into the sax solo and it’s just as clear. Some crackles can be heard at around 1:45, a pop heard. Trumpet starts, some light crackles heard, then disappear. A very strong trumpet solo, nothing behind it distracting. A strong track. Track 2 – Very clean and clear start. Piano solo comes along and it stands out, nothing distracting behind it. Ends with some light crackles, but not overwhelming. Track 3 – Track begins with some light ticks behind the music, not overpowering. Trumpet solo and there are some ticks heard, nothing consistent. It disappears as the sax solo starts. Strong solo here. Ends clear and clean. Track 4 – Trumpet solo at start, has light clicks behind it, they disappear about a minute in. Throughout the trumpet solo, about a minute later, there are sporadic ticks towards the end. Track 5 – Some crackles at the beginning can be heard, not overpowering. Sporadic pops, they are low, however. Sax solo and it clears up and sounds much better. It continues into the trombone solo, a very clear part of this track. It ends nicely. Overall grade: EX (many would call this NM it plays so well, we are being conservative here) No jumps, no skips. The music is at the forefront here on both sides, and it sounds amazing!

About this issue:
Jacket Vinyl Play grade: Side 1 Track 1 – Some light pops at the beginning, clears up about a minute in. Just a beautiful sound here. Piano part starts and the music is prominent here, just very light pop here and there, but the music is at the forefront. Track 2 – Strong out of the gate. No background noise can be heard. Trumpet solo strong, music stands out with nothing behind it. Just a couple of sporadic pops during the sax solo. After that, it is super clear and clean. Piano solo with drums behind start and, again, a beautiful section of the song here. Song ends just as strong. A very very strong track here. Side 2 Track 1 – Strong start. Music at forefront, no distracting noise behind it. Clean, and clear. Trumpet solo with bassline behind it is fantastic. Two quick pops heard, then clear. Sax solo starts, a light persistent click can be heard, though faint. It disappears after about 30 seconds. After that solo, it’s strong all the way to the end of the track. Track 2 – A strong start, just a faint few clicks can be heard. Trumpet solo with quick drums and bass behind it is strong, very clear and clean. Sax solo kicks in and it’s just as strong. Just phenomenal here! Back bassline with piano at the front and drums here, just a strong, clean and clear sound. Piano solo strong, no background noise/fuzz behind it. Trumpet comes in and again, it is strong. A few pops can be heard, nothing consistent. The song plays on here very nicely, music is at forefront. Piano part comes in and it’s exquisite. Plays strong here, very strong. Ends just as strong. Stellar track, just wonderful. Overall grade: VG (side 1) to EX (the jump on side one keeps it from a strong, full on EX)

Day 1 of record show
Wow! What a spread of vinyl! Day one of the Austin Record Convention was, well, overwhelming!
I arrived there at about quarter to nine to find the parking lot filled with dealers selling their wax to everyone waiting to get in. There were about three aisles of cars and vans with people digging through crates and boxes. Bumped into Barry from Baltimore, a quality 45s dealer I met a few weeks ago in Allentown.
Doors open at 9:30am for early admission. $25 fee. I walk in and….tables are empty. No set up Thursday night, dealers were setting up as we walked in. Not happy about that, just not how I would run things. Trying to look through crates and boxes while dealers are setting up was just chaos. How cool would it have been to walk into a room filled with records waiting for the buyers? Oh well.
The dealers were scurrying to get set up and by noon the room was full. I began digging.
First stop was Joe Moriarity’s spread of records. Joe is one of my long time buyers from Florida who has a vast collection of quality stuff. I handed him a nice stack and he generously gave me a huge discount. Thanks, Joe! Always good to see you.
It really was madness. Like piranha, the buyers feasted on a lone stack of $3 boxes. It really was something else!
This show is a good mix of high end and affordable records. The dealers were giving great discounts for multiple purchases. Nice to see.
Talked to two dealers, each of whom was there set up selling their personal collection. I like seeing that as these tables were chock full of unpicked vinyl.
Bumped into Dan from Brazil, another quality dealer with whom I’ve done business in NJ. He was planted at the $3 box pile.
Too much to see in one day. Here are some items I picked up:
Velvet Underground Nico with banana sticker, mono
Rolling Stones Super Hits Discomix 12″
Soundgarden – Superunknown in shrink
13th Floor Elevators-Bull of the Woods
Crazy World of Arthur Brown
And a ton of sealed LPs……
Left there with about 75 records.
I return tomorrow…….
Closer to Austin!
Spent yesterday in Memphis. Graceland was impressive for its indulgence. Smaller than expected, but boy, did Elvis spare no expense.
Headed to Sun Studios next. Just an overwhelming feeling…this is where rock and roll started! It’s even marked with an X on the floor where Elvis stood in 1953.
I hit Shangri-la Records and loved it. Tons of vinyl reasonably priced.
Next up was the Arkansas Record & CD Exchange. Wow! Thousands of pieces of vinyl. Take a look at those shelves. Very organized too! Picked up several sealed LPs. Clerk said it was happy hour and offered me a beer.
Headed to Dallas where I will spend the day digging for records.
